Long before shaping premium oak built-ins in Scotland, master craftsman Atilla Sener cut his teeth in one of the most demanding woodworking environments on earth: the historic boatbuilding yards of Istanbul.
Located on the northern Bosphorus where the strait meets the turbulent Black Sea, Rumeli Kavağı has been a historic maritime enclave for centuries. In its bustling coastal workshops (çekek yerleri), generations of traditional shipwrights—renowned Bosphorus masters like Kadırgalı Mustafa Usta—handcrafted wooden fishing vessels (taka and gırgır) to withstand the challenging Bosphorus currents.
It was under these master shipwrights that Atilla Sener completed his early apprenticeship. He learned to read the organic grain of local timber, to master the traditional hand adze (keser), and to shape curves where no straight lines exist. In these humid shipyards, he learned the art of steam-bending heavy oak frames, shaping Bosphorus post-and-beam ribs, and caulking planks with pitch and oakum to create watertight hulls.
This heritage of boatbuilding directly defines his work today. Wooden shipbuilding is the ultimate discipline of carpentry—where there are no straight lines, and every joint must resist immense water pressure and seasonal wood movement.
